I can set the memory needs for my program (with the help of Joe and several others). However, how do I know how much memory my program needs to run? I would have hoped it would somehow "know" how much it needs on its own. The only alternative I can see is trial and error - which may depend on what exactly you do within the program.

That's exactly how you do it. There's no easy answer; you just have to keep
raising the partition size until your application stops running out of
memory.
