I am making an app that queries a large list of items for certain things. The list of things to be queried is created on startup and does not need to be saved. All my research on databases say that you need to save a database on the hard drive in order to use it. Is there any way to create a temporary database that only exists in memory? Or should I use a different control?

You can just save to a database file stored in the Temporary Items folder. If speed is a problem, then buy Valentina. And, what you do mean by "large"?
