Since the last time I checked, just a few months ago, a PPC emulator has
apparently been released. Perhaps two or three of them. You will have
to check into this yourself as I haven't downloaded them yet. I intend
to right now :)

This is a huge step for many people involved in Mac emulation, although
it's probably kind of pointless. Just buy a used Mac. I can say the
same thing to most Mac users who use Windows/PC emulators.

The only way this might be worth it is if there is a speed increase. I
think emulators tend to run slower than the machines they are emulating.
However, this wasn't true of the copy of Basilisk II I ran on my 2 GHz
Windows machine that emulated a 68K Mac. Basilisk II helped me do a lot
of AppleScripting at home before I got a REAL Mac.

Thanks for bringing this up as I didn't know that PPC emulators had
*finally* been created.

These all look like they're free...

PearPC:
(Apparently runs OS X not sure if you need a PowerPC ROM image, but I
bet it's required.)
http://pearpc.sourceforge.net/

SheepShaver:
(Runs 7.52 to 8.6 and does not run under Windows)

Another link of interest might be...
SoftPear:
http://softpear.sourceforge.net/

If you need Mac OS and a PowerPC ROM image and possibly Linux, is it
worth dealing with all the bugs and limitations? Still might be fun to
look into.

BTW, there are IBM machines that use the same processors as Macs. You
might look into one of those to see what they can do. I think SoftPear
focuses on IBM PowerPCs:

Essentially, no. There used to be emulators for Macs using the
68k-series microprocessor, but to my knowledge no one has ever
written an emulator for a PowerPC machine. And Apple has supported
only PowerPC Macs for years now; current versions of Mac OS wouldn't
even begin to run on a 68k Mac.

If you intend to support the Mac for any of your apps, I would
suggest that you pick up at least a used Mac capable of running OS X.
This will probably run you between $500 and $1000. Otherwise, it's
probably better to not support Macs at all -- even with REALbasic,
it's not really practical to try to support a platform you can't even
test on (let alone debug).

Best,
- Joe
