I know that both Visual Basic and REALbasic have a MsgBox, but what

I am not a VB expert, but are you aware hat the msgBox has a reply facility?

If there is none (and there probably isn't, since the VB2RB conversion
utility doesn't know of any), what's the simplest way to get typed input
from a user? An EditField on a WIndow?

An editfield is certainly a simple way to get input. How fancy you want to get depends on what you are trying to accomplish.
