First a little background:
I am newbie to REALBasic from the Windows/Visual Basic world. I was never a
big fan of BASIC, I was a C programmer in my early days. As time went on I
got into the xBase family of languages because C wasn't very productive.
With the onset of Windows I returned to the C/C++ world because there was no
real practical xBase implementation for Windows. Once again I felt the pain
of low productivity with C++ and stumbled upon Visual Basic. For a number
of years VB has sufficed for my development needs but with the advent of the
whole .NET language path at Microsoft I found myself re-evaluating languages
again. Enter REALBasic. At a glance REALBasic seems to be the ultimate
BASIC. It's a fairly standard (abet aged) implementation of the BASIC
language but it has the clear advantage of being able to compile to the
three major OS platforms (Windows, Mac and Linux). Coupled with an IDE,
professional support options and an establish community it seemed almost too
good to be true. It is too good to be true.
I'm currently trying a real 'work' project and I'm finding many weaknesses.
I'm sure many of these weaknesses are as a result of my ignorance but there
seems to be no organized forum to air these issues and get useful guidance.
And thus I am here.
My questions/observations:
Is there a forum to address WINDOWS issues? I know REALBasic has been
primarily a Mac platform until fairly recently but 90% if the computer
market is a Windows world and there I am forced to work.
Is there a WINDOWS help file for the system documentation/help? The help
file in the IDE is crude and poorly indexed and cross-referenced. Tiny
fonts and a total lack of practical search capabilities really make the
product seem cruder than it deserves.
Has anyone figured out how to disconnect the IDE from the compiler/linker to
allow use of an alternate IDE/editor? Compared to VB the IDE is crude and
socially unacceptable. VB is FAR from being a great IDE but it is
reasonably civilized. Once again REALBasic comes off as being cruder than it
likely deserves.
Is there WINDOWS-centric documentation/books available for REALBasic? I've
started reading REALbasic: The Definitive Guide but it's not as useful as it
could be as much is Mac-centric. I'm finding that fairly basic Windows
tasks don't seem to be addressed in REALBasic (once again its likely
ignorance).
If this is the wrong arena please accept my apologies.
