Is there a forum to address WINDOWS issues?

Not specifically, but Windows-related questions are welcome (and common) here and on the other RB mailing lists.

Is there a WINDOWS help file for the system documentation/help?

No.

The help file in the IDE is crude and poorly indexed and cross-referenced. Tiny fonts and a total lack of practical search capabilities really make the
product seem cruder than it deserves.

I'd be interested to hear specific examples of how it is poorly indexed and cross-referenced; it seems pretty good to me. Searches also work fine for me (though you must understand that it is a whole-word search, like with Google).

However, if for whatever reason the IDE's help browser doesn't satisfy you, perhaps you'd prefer the PDF version. All the manuals are available in PDF form.

Has anyone figured out how to disconnect the IDE from the compiler/linker to
allow use of an alternate IDE/editor?

No, that is not possible.

Compared to VB the IDE is crude and socially unacceptable.

If you have specific suggestions or requests, please file them via the feedback form.

Is there WINDOWS-centric documentation/books available for REALBasic?

Not yet, though there is a Windows-centric column in RB Developer (http://www.rbdeveloper.com/).

My general advice to someone in your situation would be as follows. First, remember that RB is not a VB clone; it is better than VB in some ways, perhaps not as good in other ways. Most VB users who have learned RB have told us that they greatly prefer RB, but you may still run into features you miss. In that case, make specific suggestions via our feedback system. When you have questions on how to do something, post them to one of the forums, but make them specific if you want a specific answer. And lastly, keep in mind that our community is like a big family -- a little politeness and kindness and will be well repaid.

Best,
- Joe
