G'day Killobit, Richard, Ian & Terry,
Thanks for your replies.
I COMPLETELY missed the (totally obvious!!) 'Read Only' property - that
will suit my purpose for the moment.
I will put in a feature request for transparent.
As for me creating something 'cool' - not just yet - I'm still at the
'clunky' stage. :-)
Thanks again for treating me kindly after I had missed the *****
obvious!

You can't make the Editfield background go away, but you could make it
the same color as the window. However this will still leave a box
around the Editfield... which could be good or bad, depending on your
perspective.
Also, if you make an Editfield Read Only (and leave it Enabled), the
user can't edit it, and it leaves the text in the true and proper
color.

G'day,
I need to be able to scroll some text that the user can't edit. They
are user instructions that will not fit on the window.
I have tried an EditField that is not enabled and then using a
ScrollBar control, but the text goes gray and does not look right.
Can you scroll StaticText? I have tried but not succeeded.
Is there something else?
Also, can you make an EditField have a transparent background?
