The RIAA may use spyware for this peurpose, but there's no need to.
Run Kazaa [or whatever other PTP sharing app], search for music you own
the rights to. If anyone's sharing it, trace them by IP address.
And I wonder too how
they can tell the difference between an MP3 you ripped yourself from
your
legallly purchased CD, and one you snagged.
If you're sharing that MP3 with the world, then there's no difference.
If Bob buys the CD, rips it, and puts it in his share folder, the RIAA
doesn't see that as being any different from Sue copying Bob's MP3s
into her share folder. They're both sharing copyrighted material
without the rightsholder's permission.
