I think it would be more cost effective for everyone, to have a group of 3-5
real engineers set up mini-conferences in LA, SF, NY, Chicago, etc. Thats
what Macromedia does. I attended a full day workshop on Dreamweaver in San
Diego
and they seem to have these periodically. Plus it might be fun for Joe and
others to get a free vacation!
Regarding the actual conference, its not clear to me how much I would get out
of it, how much is relevant to my projects, etc. I only find a small part of
Real Developer immediately useful for my level/needs but that part is very
useful. Although it would be nice to meet everyone. Its just that a $1k+
(hotel,
airfare, conference fee, car rental, meals, bar tab) is a bit steep for the
fun.
$100 for a DVD set would be worth it to glean what can be gleaned, and might
generate enthusiasm for the following conference - plus unlike the real event,
they can be rewound and replayed.
