After all of the REAL World sessions are recorded, the camera crews
paid, post-production, the DVD masters made, it will still cost
$5000+ to manufacture the actual DVD sets. Even at $250 it might be
a gamble that RS could break-even on the deal.
Plus it has the effect of reducing attendance (people who are on the
fence might be inclined not to attend, thinking that they can get the
same content more cheaply by buying the DVDs), which is the exact
opposite of what's needed.
We realize not everyone can make it, and that's unfortunate, but for
the conference to be a continued success we need to encourage
participation as much as possible. We had attendees last year from
as far as Australia, and every one contributed something special that
made it such a valuable experience.
