know you don't mean penWidth because penWidth takes integers.

Yeah, I do mean penWidth. It doesn't matter that it takes integers. When you pass it a double, it will take the integer part of it. Do not declare your
scale factor property as integer, because you will end up with visible
irregularities when printing at higher resolutions.
