One other thing about most spelling checking software is that it can only compare with whatever is in its list. These lists can often be localized and a perfectly correct spelling can be shown as wrong. This occurs most frequently when British spelling and US spelling are different. In Canada we often use both.

For example:

favourite - favorite

behaviour - behavior

colour - color

cheque - check

A good spellchecker will allow one to add spellings to the dictionary used.

Also when a word is used incorrectly, a spelling checker cannot help. One that appears on the lists frequently is using "to" instead of "too".
