Part of the slowdown is due to RB's sub-optimal handling of control refreshing in composite windows. Calling refresh on a single control (which is now the recommended manner of redrawing with compositing) in a window under OS X 10.2.4 will cause the entire window, along with every control in it (even controls that do not overlap the refreshed control!) will redraw. UI-heavy windows are excruciatingly slow this way, and there is no need for them to be.
