Yes, both issues make programming in RB 5 significantly slower than it
was under 4. Then again, saving seems to be much faster.
I already have a fast machine with lots of ram, and I only work under
OS X, so a ram disk isn't a solution.
Hopefully we'll see this improve over time.

It is slower. You also lose one cool thing 4 could do - modify code
while in the debugger!
I'm not trying to be critical in a negative way, because v5 is
solving a great number of problems for me, however it's making my
debugging process far more time intensive than before.
Maybe a RAM disk? But this would be under 9 I guess.
