I want my user to be able to play a turn-based game in a window, tending to
his memo in progress, but still see smooth "idle" animation of the game
world while the net opponent is thinking about his play. And when
full-screen, a player should still be able to hear his email arrive.

I do take note of the helpful techniques that are being discussed, but they
are workarounds, not solutions...
