I want my user to be able to play a turn-based game in a window, tending to
his memo in progress, but still see smooth "idle" animation of the game
world while the net opponent is thinking about his play. And when
full-screen, a player should still be able to hear his email arrive.

Funny you should mention that - I've found that checking mail in the background, above almost anything else will kill performance dead in just about any game, even those that run in a tight loop, and I mean commercial games too, not just RB-made efforts. Many are unplayable unless you quit mail before playing.
