I started experimenting w/ Joe's Renegades engine and Netmaze code
earlier this year to build a Virtual World interface to my web site.
The project was more like Second Life than an FPS, but could be another
possibility...?

There are many first-person shooters out there, but there are none

Sounds like Cube <http://cube.sourceforge.net/> - its even got a
networked map editor!
Then there's the open source but not entirely free QuakeWorld (i.e.
the mother of all online FPS games). There are loads of QuakeWorld
ports out there but I'm partial to this one
<http://macglquake.sourceforge.net/> (I am a tad biased however!)

All right, you got me there...
Would anyone be interested in seeing or helping with such a game?
I'm an FPS junky, but this genre has gotten saturated to the point
where I haven't even bought Half Life 2 yet. You'll have a lot of
competition too - Older commercial FPS games go for next to nothing
nowadays - I recently bought Unreal 2, DeusEx 2, and SIN for a _total_
of $13 - Canadian! Unreal 2 was $14.99 with a $15 rebate, so they
actually paid me to play it!
Unless you've got a unique gameplay twist or
uber-shiny-bumpy-realtime-shadow graphics, most people will poopoo the
game before even trying it.
My 2 cents,
Frank.
