I don't know of anything available off the shelf, but there have been a few
projects I have worked on where we needed some characters in an 1800's
style. We ended up going to the local historical society and making
photocopies of an old 1832 school masters journal and redrawing the
characters in Illustrator. We then took the re-drawn images into Macromedia
Photographer and building a font from that.
It takes a while, but the end result is pretty nice.
