Yes, those sorts of things. Very hard to pull that stuff off with
skeletal animation.
That's a good example of what I meant by "depends on how well they
import". This kind of stuff is actually well suited for bones/hooks
in most 3D animation apps, but many games don't support bone scaling
or vertex weighting (smooth joint transitions) in order to keep the
system simple and fast. Nowadays, with ample CPU speed and RAM it
shouldn't be much trouble to support such features, but it introduces
more details the importers/exporters need to get right, and may be
feature overkill 90% of the time.
