Well the slow down is happening in my tests in the RB3DSpace.Update method which doesn't necessarily do only the rendering, but may also compute some bounding volumes I recall?

OK, so 1.7 is substantially faster in some tests, but substantially slower in Renegades. What could we be doing there that's different from the simpler tests? Fog? Heavy use of translucency? Maybe it's not the rendering at all, but the culling (which is supported by Quesa in the calculation of bounding boxes)?
