You shouldn't need to call PaintBuffered at all. Just switch your

Sorry. That is the connection I have not yet made with RB. When you say
implement my paint event as normal, what is normal? Is the paint event
where changes to my graphics should take place? If so, what triggers
this event?
I've looked through lots of sample projects, but they are all far too
simple in concept, or far too complex for me to get an understanding of
what is going on. Is there a well-commented canvas-based project out
there that a newbie should look at?
( Incidentally, I have already changed the super of my canvas to
AutoBufferingCanvas which is working fine. )
