I think it's more a matter of where the corporate machine is at the moment
precluding marketing & development dollars from the linux space because they're
already making bucks-a-plenty where they're at, and Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo are
pressuring them (albeit relatively lightly) to stay there.
If John Carmack was to announce tomorrow that Doom 4 (or whatever) was going to
be a linux exclusive, I imagine hundreds of web sites popping up describing
exactly how to get linux installed or configured for multi-boot for the
thousands that would be taking the plunge.
The only reason I personally don't play many games on my linux boxen is because
I don't have many games for linux (Civ, Tribes 2, NWN, a few other minor ones).
On the other hand I can't go 24hrs without seeing and advertisement for GTA San
Andreas on PS2 or XBox, etc...
Make (good) games for the platform and an audience will show up.
[I will ignore the "which distro should I choose" factor for now]

Reminds me of a comment made by an Inn owner when it was pointed out
they didn't have any wheelchair access:
"Well, we don't get many customers in wheelchairs."
