I've solved my own problem. I use a slider control to specify a percentage of the models diameter that is used to scale the x or y positions of all the relevant vertices in the trimesh. This transforms my trimesh into a 3D object whose cross section is either a horizontally or vertically oriented oval with user defined flatness as required.
