Il tuo problema si risolve più semplicemente (in teoria) scaricando
su un file i dati della tabella e aggiungendo nella scrittura di ogni
riga il contatore che diventa la colonna aggiunta. Poi si altera la
definizione dell'archivio in modo che accetti la colonna aggiunta
come parte della tabella, la si svuota e si fa il caricamento dal file.
