great suggestion. didn't even notice that method before. it says:
"Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider
upgrading MySQL Client."
I just found a page in the mysql docs that discusses this error:

I changed mrpib's password to the old encryption type (according the
instructions in the article) and flushed the privs. rb connects fine now.
