Unfortunately, the average Palm/CE device makes for a poor reading companion and Softscreens/Electronic Paper are still a bit away (even though Steven Baxtor thought that we'd have them by now).

Exactly why the Newton is bang on the right size, although a bit on the big side. There are usually lots available on eBay for 50 - 100 and a very active developer community for them as well. They support Blue Tooth, WiFi, all kinds of PC cards, GPS and still a number of things that a Palm or CE device doesn't do. Just because they're old doesn't mean they aren't still the Cadillac of hand helds.
