can anybody tell me the format (XML?) and encoding of .mbox files?

Mbox format is an old pseudo-standard, consisting of a bunch of email
messages concatenated together. That's really all there is to it. The format
predates XML by at least a couple of decades, and nobody ever got around to
writing an RFC.
Here's some documentation about mbox and its variations:

Thanks. How funny I thought the mbox thing was a fresh invention...

Entourage (which I dont have)? If format and encoding are the same,
then the matter becomes rather simple.
I'd be surprised if Entourage used anything nearly so standard as an mbox
file; its data is almost certainly stored in some custom database whose
format is known only to Microsoft.
from a Mac magazine, I read that Entourage (Office v.X & 2004)
support mbox thru drag&dropping...
Thanks also to David for answering,
