why do all the colors of any gifs or jpegs (or whatever) look so much darker and lower contrast on a win32 box than on my mac?

i've always noticed this, but it hasn't been such a worry until now with cross-compilation of this rb app i'm working on.

(in general, not just in rb apps. for instance, in web pages too, regardless of browser.)

i have noticed this on many win32 boxes and many macs, so it's not just the monitor settings. there's something different about how windows interprets color data.

anyone know for certain what the deal is?
