Mark's product works seemlessly and fast and the price is VERY reasonable.
At the price REALBasic + pgsql4RB + postgresql beat the hell out of
dealing with database vendors such as 4D - a connection I am desperately
trying to leave (I have an installed database programme which runs my
practice and I won't be able to boot 4D off it fast enough). They
recently demanded $AUD4000 for 2 extra user connections which previously
cost $AUD300. I'll happily support Aliacta any day after this.

I understand working with pgSQL4RB is going to cost more than with RB
only. And I understand the frustration because it is what drove us
to develop pgSQL4RB in the first place. And believe me, whatever
pgSQL4RB license you buy is peanuts compared with our time spent
developing it! Only to write the manual it took us a whole month.
We don't do this to make money but because we need a decent tool
ourselves. If we'd keep it just for ourselves it would cost us much
less than putting it online. The license fee is merely to recoup our
extra costs to share pgSQL4RB with the RB community (manual, support,
wrapping it up for download, etc.). Financially we don't expect more
and you who only have to spend a few hundred Euros/Dollars to get a
finished product have the best deal and that's totally ok with us
because we would develop pgSQL4RB anyway. Plus I know for a fact
that most pgSQL4RB users are rather fans than customers, and very
happy to support our work with the license fee and this recognition
is really heartwarming.
Cheers,
Marc
PS: When we decided how to share pgSQL4RB we ruled out a donation
system and figured it would be fair for every user to pay the same
amount thus securing the viability of the whole "sharing" idea of the
project. (With a donation system we would probably no longer have
been willing to share pgSQL4RB by now.)
When we had to put a price tag on the license, we simply considered this:
Of all the developers only RB developers will buy a license.
Of these only the database developers can be retained.
And then of the RB database developers only the PostgreSQL
developers can be interested so this makes for a very small user
community--but it's a fine one! ;-)
With that in mind we set our pricing scheme and now after one year we
have been able to verify that our price estimation was approximately
right to keep on sharing pgSQL4RB with you.
