Ni hao,
As a student of Chinese I can tell you that it works well with Chinese Symbols, and its easy to test on the Mac thanks to the fact that the OS can display the symbols without having to purchase or instal other software, I have a second user account on the computer which I use in different languages. With this experience I can only conclude that it does work with Japanese Symbols too.

I beg to differ with the comment below, as Japanese has some major different characters to Chinese, albeit some are very similar in look and meaning.

"As you may know, the Japanese writing system uses kanji (Chinese
characters) and requires support for double byte characters (DBCS) -- is or can your software be made compatible with this? This is a pre-requisite for the translation and localization as well as for sales and distribution in
Japan."
