My experience has been in abandoning 4D for PostgreSQL and never looking back.

sorry for continuining this OT, but which is pretty relevant to what rb dev has to deal with.

can u explain a bit more why's that ? i did a lot of 4D and i still think it's pretty powerfull and maybe more easy to program than RB/postgres for more powerfull results. maybe i'm wrong, didn't do some 4D, and i currently doing RB/postgres stuff ;) (i'm starting postgres, so i can't really judge anything vs 4D yet.)

Main reasons for switching from 4D -> PostGre (or any other DBMS for that matter):
1. Speed
2. Non-standard programming language
3. Not object oriented -> code repetition
4. MacOS X compatibility (although I've heard things are better now)
5. Extensibility (unless you plan on buying even more pricy plug-ins)
6. Price
7. Price ;-)

4th Dimension is very powerful, but it's pricing policy is just over the edge. While it may take you some more time initially, if you design your application well, you'll be able to make it faster, better and cut your price by 1/3 (or make more profit ;-)).

Best regards
