Cool...  Now I get it!  Yep it appears that styledtext does what I initially
thought it should do (and Joe Strout reaffirmed).  However as Andy pointed
out the debugger isn't helping me because it still does not show any values.
That was hanging me up (well that amongst other things).  The examples you
posted act as if there are values despite their absence in the debugger.

Finally!  I'm back on the wagon!

You lose the style data if you assign back to a StyledText object's text
property.
