If you don't permit the users to have duplicated nicks, then yes. 
Otherwise it would be better to permit for two users to have the same 
nick and use the registration code (or ID) like dictionary's key.
To watch how the other chat programs act could help to find the solution 
for a common problem / issue already solved.
