These decisions are certainly not made by "programmers".
Indirectly, they are. I did not see any programmers, other than
HyperCard's lead programmer, come up to bat for HyperCard. Yes,
management made the final decision, not to so much appease multimedia
authoring companies, but to appease Steve Jobs.
Has anything come along since 1997 as easy? The alternatives are not.
Management would have also killed AppleScript. AppleScript survived
because its lead programmer batted for it, even to standing on
executive's desks.
The inmates are running the asylum, especially when a product is
deprecated or changed out underneath, and customers have no say, must
either regroup or start over. Disappearing tool and inspector
palettes could be one example. :)
