You should always stick to the system settings since that is what the
user has selected for their OS. ;-)
In some cases that would depend on your type of program, would it not ?
Certainly -- things like games can get away with using their own UI
elements (including fonts, colors, etc). But if your application is
meant to play nicely on the system with other applications, it should
try to adhere to the UI standards as much as it can. I won't comment
with my opinions on custom UI (think windows media player, iTunes on
Windows, etc).
