In the course of looking, I did look at the documentation for the new operator; what a mess. I assume new always returns a valid object, since you cannot "return nil" from a constructor. If the app ran out of all available RAM (real and virtual), I think it would crash rather than have new return nil. And yes, the docs for new are quite ugly...
