Of all the suggestions I like "pull" the best...
e.g. "pull the rug out from under him"

Perhaps. FYI, it's still making progress -- I did about an hour's
worth on it just the other day. I hope to have a web page up for it
soon, and then I'll post whatever I have, even though it still has a
long way to go to be considered reasonably complete.
I'd be inclined to call this function PopFirst or PopFront. Or maybe
Pop0. Hmm, or maybe Pull -- instead of popping the top item off the
stack, you're pulling the bottom one out from under all the others.
