Connect and monitor a VPN connection on a headless machine

Hi,

I'm looking to write a console application that will upon startup of  
a headless server establish a VPN connection.
Right now I have to do this via ARD and launching Apple's Internet  
Connect. The goal is not having to do this when
a) the server needs to be restarted
b) the VPN discconnects

'b' happens every now and then and it's not consistent. So I also  
want to be able to monitor that connection and re-establish it in  
case it dropped.
I'm looking of course to RB to do this. Perhaps it's doable with  
AppleScript or even with a shellscript/cron combination. Trouble is,  
I have no idea how to establish a VPN connection other than clicking  
the 'Connect' button in the Internet Connect GUI.
Any suggestions?
