I don't see many progress bars, in fact.
The ones in all Finder commands (copy, for instance) are the small  
version.
There is a big version in the "Activity Monitor" window of "Mail" but  
this one is not always used.
In RB, there are both (a small in the bottom of the window (when you  
compile or check for errors, for instance) and the big one when you  
want to debug (in the "run" panel)).
When iTunes is launched, the window "Loading iTunes library" uses the  
small version.

No other idea at the moment.
