If it has 10.4 already installed and a computer made before January
2003, he can install OS9 on the same partition as OSX and boot from
that. Problems encountered in earlier OSX versions were fixed in 10.3
or 10.4. Even then, if OSX was installed first and OS9 installed
later, it would usually work. Problems would occur if OS9 were
installed before OSX at that time. Still, a separate drive or
partition was always recommended for a full OS9 boot.
Computers with a G4 and Firewire800 or any G5 or Intel chip cannot
boot in OS9 at all. OSX 10.4 will run on most later G3's and all G4's.
As of 10.5, Classic has been dropped as well as requiring at least a
PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster).
