It would be obvious if the drive were partitioned; you would see the
other partition on your desktop.

So says Mr. Little:
"Sure you can. If I remember correctly OS 9 won't install on a partition
that already has OS X on it but you can move the OS 9 application and
system folder to any partition after the fact. I actually recommend
making a disk image of these two folders to simplify restoring the
machine at some future point."
You would use Disk Utility to both make the disk image and to burn a DVD
to transfer the folder, assuming the older machine has a burner. Or you
could use an external drive to make the transfer or a firewire connection.
You might check the Apple Discussions forum for confirmation.
I will look at my G4 laptop and see what OS 9 looks like on it; I never
use it (OS 9) but I can see how it is organized on the box.
