It was part of the 2008r1 release notes:

RS hasn't said when they are dropping SpriteSurface but it was hinted that
it might be as soon as 2008r2. I'm very disappointed with this strategy of
replacing an RB feature with an unreleased product from a third-party. With
all respect to John, SuperSpriteSurface seems to have been in the works
since 2005. That gives me no confidence that there will be any kind of
active maintenance particularly since he isn't charging for it. There are
some hints about a source code license but no guidance on cost.
