There is no such thing as a mass-market when it comes to 3D toolkits for
programming languages. Hence, I can't consider mass-market pricing. I'm
also not treating hobbyists as my main market (although I don't want to
ignore the bedroom-developer totally.)
Hobbyists would probably have a great deal of trouble justifying the
cost of XS3D, but there are corporations who would happily pay whatever
I charge for it (so long as it's not totally ludicrous =) if it does
the job. The issue here is striking a happy medium.
You simply have to look at the Visual Basic side of the market and see
that the equivalent toolkit would cost you several thousand dollars. The
thing about the Visual Basic market is the level of saturation into the
Professional sectors it has. There's probably more corporations using VB
than individuals!
The same is not true (yet) of REALbasic, as it is perceived as more of
a hobbyist product than a professional tool. This will hopefully change
over time, and a market will open up for third-party tool developers.
Thankfully, I'm here already so I'll have an enormous lead over people
coming into the arena later on. =)
