It's been my experience that VPC is so slow as to be almost unusable for real testing. VMware on the PC performs very well, but obviously it cannot emulate the Mac. But it still has the advantage that you can install multiple OSes on the same box in a sandbox environment. I'd recommend VMWare instead of VPC if you're going to be running on a native box.
