Because it's popular mainly with those who figured it out and now feel
superiour because they know more than others, and their ego makes them
like to announce their own greatness everywhere :)
Just like the Mac users at the other end :-p

Sounds familiar. Yes, Linux can be quite a pain to handle.

At least with Suse, which I managed to install a few times, there's
a rather hidden mode where I can put the installation screen into
plain text mode instead of graphic text. To achieve this, I had to
press a certain F-key rather at the beginning of the installation
(it was shown in the bottom of the screen after the first parts of
the Linux installer had loaded)
Another, maybe easier, option would be to get either a PC emulator.
Then, you can create a large file which acts as a disk drive inside
the emulator.
Favorites are Virtual PC (for PC and Mac) and VMWare (PC only), but
a cheaper alternative is "Blue Label" (Mac only) from Lismore, which
is now called "Guest PC", I believe.
I used to use Blue Label for a while and while it was notably slower
than VPC, it worked well enough for me.
If you have some file sharing software installed (eMule!) you might
also be able find a VPC or VMWare installer somewhere...
