Hmm. I don't think that's really been my experience. There may be some
things about a particular desktop (Gnome vs KDE) that are slow. But,
in general, I find Linux to be peppier than Windows.
The PC is faster than my Mac.
But the visual updates on Linux are slower than my Mac, and slower than
the Windows visual updates on the same computer.
On my Mac, if I have no other apps open, the visual updates are pretty
smooth, even what with huge transparant windows being moved in realtime
across the screen.
As for general data-processing, no idea.
I get the feeling you need to know developing an OS from the inside
out, to be able to tweak your linux box to get the speed out of it that
many Linux fans are so proud to talk about.
For the rest of us... Well for me, I don't seem to get it.
