[ANN] MONTICELLO, IL (November 2, 2006) - ScopeDriver, a program for
astronomers using Macintosh and Windows computers, has recently added
functionality that has already become popular among professional and
amateur astronomers.
ScopeDriver has been designed by active, serious observers. Its
intuitive interface leads to a quick grasp of the program. It runs
quickly, places modest demands on the computer, and facilitates
observing rather than constant attention to the screen.
ScopeDriver 3.0 was made with REALbasic, from REAL Software, Inc.
Among ScopeDriver's nearly 100 enhancements:
Interpolated Tracking provides more accurate sidereal tracking for
Meade Autostar and compatible telescopes, allowing "fine-tuning" of
the tracking rate in increments as small as 0.001 Hz, much finer than
the standard 0.1 Hz increment. Users specify the desired tracking
rate, and ScopeDriver switches between the two nearest frequencies
that the telescope supports, precisely timing the duration of each
frequency to achieve the target frequency.
Automated Observing Runs are used to sequentially slew the telescope
to an unlimited number of celestial objects, pausing for periods that
may be independently set for each object. Follow-up actions (such as
parking the telescope or performing some other action) may also be
specified for each object. Automated Observing Runs have already
proven useful during ScopeDriver 3.0's testing period, and are being
applied in observing runs, photographic surveys, variable star work,
and other pursuits.
Observing Lists and Find Object Windows have added Rise, Transit, and
Set times to their data displays. When sorting by time, the sorted
data begins at 12:00 noon, so that objects with events crossing the
midnight hour will not be split.
ScopeDriver's Observing Lists, considered by many to be central to
their observing programs, enjoy increased flexibility in data
display, sorting, and functionality. Improvements have been made to
Observing List "Full Screen Mode," which displays an Observing List's
object along with its data, and moves from object to object with a
tap of any key.
Version 3.0 contains nearly 100 enhancements, and may be downloaded
and evaluated free of charge for 30 days. ScopeDriver costs $30 to
register, and includes unlimited technical support via e-mail.
ScopeDriver requires a Macintosh or Windows computer. The Macintosh
version is a Universal Binary, running on any Power Mac or Intel Mac
that runs Mac OS X 10.2 or later. The Windows version requires a PC
capable of running Windows 98 or later.
