Starting with REALbasic v4.5, Editfields support all text-based services
provided by the Services menu item on the Application menu in Mac OS X.
Services can do lots of cool things like create an email message with the
selected text. To try out the speech service, do this:

1. Create a new project.
2. Drag an editfield onto the window.
3. Run your project.
4. Type "Wow, this is really cool." in the editfield.
5. Select all the text in the editifield.
6. Choose Application Menu -> Services -> Speech - > Start Speaking Text.

There are of course many other services that are installed by default with
Mac OS X and still others that are available on the Internet.
